about

“The Aviators’ Ball is the perfect soundtrack to a film not yet realised, and one of the most gorgeous albums you’ll hear this year.” Dom Servini, Echoes Magazine

“a masterwork that outstrips genre”. Mike Butler, Dyverse Music

Matt Owens has been a creative component of Manchester’s vibrant music scene writing, arranging and playing bass with acts such as Kirsty Almeida, La Gran Descarga, Baked A La Ska, The Wagon Train, Ríoghnach Connolly and The Magic Beans. His music has been used in the films Pategonia and Albatross and on the American TV show Arrow.

The Aviators’ Ball is his debut album and fuses folk with elements of jazz, world and classical music. It features a host of Manchester’s finest musicians including trumpeters Neil Yates (Kate Rusby) and Steve Chadwick (Sam Lee), pianists John Ellis (Cinematic Orchestra) and Edward Barnwell, drummers Rick Weedon and Danny Ward alongside The Souza Wind Quintet and The Vintage String Quartet.

As well as writing his own material Owens arranged several guest singers’ songs: Tom Davies‘ tender Mouse Song, Zoe Kyoti’s ethereal Monsoon and Ríoghnach Connolly’s haunting interpretation of the traditional folk song Black Is The Colour. The album was co-produced by singer Kirsty Almeida (who adds a vocalise to Going Back to the Village) and was mixed by John Ellis at Limefield Studio, Manchester.

The inspiration for the title The Aviators' Ball came from a visit to Prague during the city's ball season. Different civic societies each have their own ball and he happened to go to the one organised by the Aviation society, hence "The Aviators Ball". The waltzing and romance of a bygone era seem perfectly fitting as a title and reflects the beautiful charm of Owens’ timeless debut.

“the genuineness of its eclectic, yesteryear approach, the persuasive strength of its endearingly tuneful hooks and arrangements make it utterly irresistible – certainly a delightful musical diversion.” Adrian Pallant, AP reviews

“An album to cherish. Absolutely wonderful.” Phil Barnes, All About Jazz

“Owens’ début is an album to be proud of, a genre straddling record that manages to create its own uniquely distinctive sound world, evocative of both a century ago and now.” Ian Mann, thejazzmann.com

“The Aviators’ Ball is sheer delight…truly one of “those” albums. The kind of album which starts the dreamer dreaming and invites the listener to lose themselves in a delightfully unique world created by people who truly believe in the magic of music and its transformative qualities.” Becca Horne, Jazz In Europe

“Charming…the real stand-out track for me is the traditional Scots ballad Black Is The Colour. Worth the price of the album for this piece alone!” Peter Bacon, Thejazzbreakfast.com

“What a beautiful album.” Dave Sumner, Bird Is The Worm (album of the week)

“might just take your breath right away.” Marlbank Review
